Story
Tanner, a cute 10-month-old tabby kitten from Minnesota, became picky about his food and was losing weight rapidly. Tanner was very lethargic and wasn't the spirited kitten he once was. His mom, concerned for his well-being, made an appointment for an examination.
Tanner had a 104.6° fever, and his bloodwork revealed that he was anorexic and had elevated protein and globulin counts. Additional bloodwork was performed to rule out cancer or FIP. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a severe, usually fatal disease caused by Feline Coronavirus if left untreated.
Tanner's fever was addressed with antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids for dehydration. He was sent home with anti-nausea medication and high-calorie kitten food. While waiting for the additional bloodwork results, his veterinarian proactively prescribed an antiviral medication to treat FIP, which needed to be compounded at a pharmacy and typically takes 10 days.
The bloodwork results confirmed that Tanner was FIP positive. Fortunately, Tanner was diagnosed early, and with the antiviral treatment, he has a great chance of fully recovering. Tanner will need to be treated for 84 days, and additional bloodwork will be done to monitor his protein, liver, and kidney levels and globulin count on days 30, 60, and 84. Once this is completed, Tanner will enter a 100-day observation period.
The additional cost for Tanner's treatment and follow-up medical care is estimated to exceed $1,800.00. However, his mom can not afford it, she has maxed out her care credit account to cover Tanner‘s diagnosis, urgent medical care, and the first 10 days of his antiviral treatment.
Tanner's mom adopted him after a friend invited her to a “yoga with cats” event at a local shelter. She had no intention of adopting a kitty, having recently lost her sweet orange boy, Levi, to heart disease. However, Tanner, the shyest kitten there, crawled into her lap, and she fell in love.
Tanner has a wonderful furever home, and this treatment will SAVE his life! Please help Tanner get the life-saving treatment he desperately needs!
