Story

Nala was misdiagnosed! Nala, a beautiful 10-year-old kitty from Tennessee, has been suffering from chronic itchy ears for months. Her ears constantly bleed from her scratching the scabs. Her mom has spent hundreds of dollars on her veterinary care. Nala was treated for ear mites, fleas, mange, yeast, and bacterial infections with topical treatments, antibiotics, and steroids to no avail. Desperate to ease her sweet girl’s pain, Nala’s mom sought a second opinion.

A culture was taken and sent to the laboratory. The results revealed that Nala was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). White cats are more susceptible to developing SCC in areas with little or no pigment, such as the ears and nose. Nala’s veterinarian has recommended a double Pinnectomy, a surgical procedure that involves removing the external ear flap (pinna) completely at the base as soon as possible.

Surgery has been estimated between $1,104.22-1,304.22. However, her mom, who barely gets by on government assistance, can not afford it.

Nala’s mom has exhausted every resource possible. She said, β€œI have spent countless hours researching and vetting different grants, calling the humane society, and the PPH program AlignCare. Unfortunately, after contacting them I was informed that AlignCare is not servicing my area. I am at a loss. I can’t stand seeing anyone or anything in pain. I have reached out to UT’s pet equity social services department and they had no answers but offered the same list of resources I had researched on my own.”

Nala was adopted eight years ago. While her mom was filling out the adoption papers, Nala nestled her way into her purse, waiting patiently to go to her furever home. Nala is deeply loved, and this surgery will change her life!

Can you help relieve beautiful Nala’s pain?

Nala Had Surgery!

Beautiful Nala had surgery this week to remove squamous cell carcinoma growth on her ear pinna. The surgery went well, and Nala is recovering at home. She was prescribed antibiotics and pain medication. Nala will wear the β€œcone of shame” to prevent her from scratching her ears and causing damage to the delicate tissue until fully healed.

A biopsy was sent to the laboratory for analysis. Nala will have a recheck and suture removal 10 days post-op. We will have more updates on Nala soon!
