Story
Mookie, a floof from Tennessee was struggling to breathe. Mookie was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia, often caused by blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.
In March of 2023, Mookie had snuck outside; when he returned Mookie was covered in feces and urine. His mom was concerned as the neighbor’s dogs were not “cat friendly” and she worried he had been attacked. She rushed Mookie to the veterinary clinic and miraculously, Mookie had no visible wounds and recovered from his ordeal outside.
However, a few weeks ago, Mookie’s mom noticed his breathing was shallow, having bouts of loose stool, and eating very little. She took him to the veterinary clinic and the veterinarian confirmed Mookie’s breathing was abnormal and recommended taking an x-ray and testing his stool for parasites. The x-ray revealed a massive diaphragmatic hernia and Mookie’s small intestines and spleen had migrated into his chest cavity.
A diaphragmatic hernia is fatal if left untreated. Mookie’s mom could not afford the $2,625.53 cost of his life-saving surgery and was heartbroken watching Mookie suffer. Her only option was to humanely euthanize him. However, while searching the internet for animal welfare organizations she found us on Great Nonprofits website and reached out for help.
We had to save this handsome boy. We used funds from the Emergency Fund and Mookie had surgery on Saturday. The surgery was extremely complicated as some of his intestines had adhered to the chest cavity wall but his surgeon was able to put everything back in place. On Sunday Mookie developed a fever, as a caution he was kept an additional night. Mookie did well and went home to his family this morning! We will have more updates on Mookie soon.
