June is National Preparedness Month!

June is National Pet Preparedness Month. A month that serves as a helpful reminder of what to do in case of an emergency or natural disaster.

It only takes a short time to create an emergency plan for yourself and your pets, and it can prove to be life-saving.

Here are some essential tips that will help ensure you and your pets are prepared in the face of an emergency:

  1. IDENTIFICATION: One of the most important ways to be prepared is to have your pets adequately identified. Make sure your pet is microchipped, and if they do not have one yet, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have one put in place. A collar on your pet with your contact information is also a good source of identification.

  2. KNOW WHERE TO GO: If your area is prone to flooding, wildfires, or any other natural disaster where you may have to evacuate, it is essential to find a place outside of the area where you can take your pets with you.

  3. STAY TOGETHER: Natural disasters can be frightening and even more chaotic for our pets. When transporting them, and for a few days after a disaster, it is essential to have your dog on a leash at all times while you are outside and your cat has a comfortable and safe cat carrier.

  4. MAKE AN EMERGENCY KIT: A pre-made emergency kit for your pet can prove vital should you evacuate your home. Your pet’s emergency kit should include a few days' worths of food, water bottles, extra medication, copies of veterinary records, poop bags, cat litter, a pan, sturdy leashes and collars, and a first aid kit, a list of pet-friendly hotels, dishes. It never hurts to have an extra packed away for emergencies if they have a favorite treat or toy!

  5. KNOW WHO CAN HELP: If a disaster hits while you are away from your home, it is a great idea to ask a neighbor, friend, or family member in advance for help if an emergency happens. Make sure to have updated stickers on your front door, letting emergency personnel know how many pets are in the home should they need to get in to rescue them.

No one likes to think a natural disaster will happen in their area, but these strategies will help ensure that you and your pets are prepared.
