This beautiful furbaby has been struggling with a chronic disease for years. Ava is only eight years old and was diagnosed with Idiopathic Megacolon, a painful condition that causes her colon to enlarge and become severely constipated.
Megacolon is the most common cause of obstipation in cats. Ava’s condition has deteriorated to where she has lost normal nerve function in the large intestine, and Ava has lost the ability to pass feces regularly.
Despite a low fiber, highly digestible prescription diet and medications to alleviate Ava’s symptoms, she is constantly at the veterinary clinic for de-obstipation of dried, hard feces from her intestines with enemas or manual removal. Each veterinary visit costs her mom hundreds of dollars, which she pays for with care credit; however, while paying off the credit balance, Ava becomes constipated again and needs to return for another treatment.
Ava’s veterinarian has recommended Colectomy surgery to remove the nonfunctioning part of the colon. Although this procedure may involve the removal of most of the colon, the anal sphincter will be left intact, so Ava should not lose bowel control. Most cats do reasonably well after this procedure, with few permanent side effects.
A Board board-certified specialist surgeon will perform the highly skilled surgery, and the cost is estimated at $2876.73 - 3026.73. However, Ava’s mom cannot afford it. She is a second-grade school teacher in an impoverished district; her salary is meager, but she loves teaching and changing young lives for the better; she gives back to her community daily!
